part of a landmark deal between the two sides, had already raised tensions ahead of Djuric’s arrest. Serb List now says that it will start
work to set up the community on its own, as announced by the party’s head Goran Rakic after representatives of his party held a meeting in Belgrade with Vucic and Djuric, broadcaster RTK reported. This in turn has angered the Kosovan government, which says such a step can’t be taken without its permission.
Meanwhile Russia, which has consistently backed Belgrade on the Kosovo issue, again threw
its weight behind its ally. The Russian foreign ministry issued a strongly-worded statement on
March 27, saying that Russia resolutely condemns this action that is "aimed at intimidating all Kosovo Serbs and arbitrary treatment of Djuric."
Vucic said on March 28 he had spoken by phone
to Russian President Vladimir Putin to inform him about the attack on Djuric. Speaking to the Russian president, Vucic sought advice on how to counter the “violence and aggression by Pristina” against the Serbs, according to the presidential statement. Putin condemned the attack and stressed that he is aware of the pressure exerted on Vucic and Serbia, and that, accordingly, he will take further measures and react in time. He also underlined that the two presidents will remain in contact.
