The State Statistics Service of Ukraine has announced that foreign direct investment in the Ukrainian economy grew by $840mn to $33.7bn in equity capital during the first six months of 2019, a 2.6% increase compared with the corresponding period of last year.
The highest share of foreign investment ($318.5mn) went to the financial and insurance sector, followed by the extraction and processing industries ($185mn and $114mn). Cyprus remained the leading investor, followed by the Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland.
Meanwhile, capital investment grew by 13% during the January-June period, amounting toUAH 234bn ($1.3bn).
New foreign direct investment in Ukraine was $1.9bn in 2017, the State Statistics Service said. About one quarter, or $506mn, was from Cyprus, presumably offshore Ukrainian or Russian money. The next four sources were: Russia -- $396mn; the Netherlands -- $262mn; Britain -- $212mn; and Germany -- $119mn.
