Rio police arrest members
of group targeting Petrobras
contractors
Police in Rio de Janeiro took action last week against an organized crime group that has allegedly been interfering in the business of
companies serving as contractors to Petrobras, the national oil company (NOC).
Romulo Santos, a police investigator in Rio de Janeiro, told the press on July 4 that 43 peo- ple had been arrested on charges related to the case.  e suspects are believed to be members of a militia that extorted money from companies transporting work crews to Petrobras’ re nery in Comperj, which is still under construction, he said.
 e same group stands accused of monopo- lising the distribution of cooking gas in the city of Itaborai, he added.
Santos went on to say that the Rio police had identi ed at least 77 suspects in the case to
date.He also stated that the group had maimed, tortured and killed people to further its own interests.
