Eastern Europe’s video subscription revenues to triple in size by 2023
The economic boom in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) is having a knock-on effect on the region’s content-providing services and will see over-the-top revenues from subscriptions triple in the next five years to £3.51bn, according to Digital TV Research’s Europe OTT TV & Video Forecasts report released in August.
Due to years of copyright abuse and media businesses being mostly dominated by local players, big international media companies have largely avoided the region. In addition, Russia imposed a 20% cap on foreigners owning media assets, which has further restricted international players' ability to enter the market.
By far the largest market in CEE, Russia is expected to account for two-fifths of the region’s over-the-top revenues by 2023, with Po- land generating another 23%.
From the $2.495bn in additional revenues that companies are ex- pected to earn between 2017 and 2023, Russia will provide $994mn, with Poland bringing in a further $537mn.
Driving these revenues will be an estimated 22.1mn subscription video on demand (SVOD) subscribers by 2023 from the region –
a three-fold increase over the reporting period. Of the 15mn addi- tional subscribers during the period, Russia will account for
5mn and Poland 4mn.
The number of Czechs using online banking services has trebled in the past decade, rising from 12% in 2008 to 57% in 2017, the EU statistical arm Eurostat reported on August 20.
The Czech economy is becoming increasingly cashless, along with the wider European trend. Among EU member states, internet banking is most common in Denmark, where it is used by 90% of people aged 16 to 74, and the Netherlands with 89%, followed by Scandinavian countries. The lowest numbers of internet banking users were registered in Bulgaria (5%) and Romania (7%), reports Radio Prague.
Online banking is growing fast in Czechia with the Republic rising from the 20-24th spot in 2007 to the 12-13th spot in 2017, and surpassing Germany in the process with 56% of internet banking users.
According to Eurostat data, internet banking is particularly popular among 25 to 34 year-olds, with 68% using it. The use of internet banking tends to increase in line with the education level of the users, Radio Prague added.
