5.2 Balance of payments
The January trade balance switched to the surplus of $260mn from the deficit of UAH362mn in December. The surplus of primary income enlarged to $268mn in January from $52mn in December, the surplus of secondary income declined to $269mn from $390mn.
The deficit of Ukraine’s balance of payments in January amounted to $220mn (vs. a $906mn surplus in January 2020).
The deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods and services in 2020 amounted to $260mn, which is 14.4 times less than in 2019, and is associated with a decrease in the deficit in trade in goods by 2.2 times, to $4.88bn, the State Statistics Service has said. Taking into account the data released earlier, in the fourth quarter the foreign trade deficit increased to $790mn from $540mn in the third quarter, compared with a surplus of $1.07bn in the second quarter and a minimum deficit of $10mn in the first quarter.
Ukraine’s trade deficit in goods and services shriveled last year to $255mn – 93% below the level of 2019, reports the State Statistics Service. The most dynamic factor was the 12.5% drop in imports of goods, to $59.3bn. Exports of good fell by a smaller amount, by 7.8%, to $59.04bn.
Ukraine’s goods trade deficit in 2020 reached $4.9bn dropping from $10.7bn in the previous year, the State Statistics Service reported February 15. Goods imports reached $54.1bn, declining 11.0% y/y, while exports amounted to $49.2bn, sliding 1.7% y/y.
