Petrobras completes 3D seismic study at Búzios field section
BRAZIL’S national oil company (NOC) said last week that it had wrapped up a 3D seismic study of the transfer of rights section of Búzios, an off- shore field located more than 200 km from Rio de Janeiro.
In a statement, government-controlled Petrobras described the 3D Búzios Nodes programme as the largest seismic survey ever conducted with depth receivers in the ultra-deepwater zone. It said it had begun work on the programme in November 2018, using advanced OBN (ocean botton nodes) technol- ogy to collect data from an area measuring 1,620 square km.
The company intends to use the information it gathers to support future development work and reservoir management efforts at the Búzios field. This will help optimise yields and will make the project more economically efficient, the statement said.
Petrobras went on to say that it had collected the data from receivers set in 6,600 positions in waters ranging from 1,600 metres to 2,200 metres deep. It used a contractor, a partnership established by Compagnie Générale de Géophy- sique (CGG) and Seabed Solutions, to place the
units.
To uphold its obligations, the partnership
used Manta seismic receivers, which are capable of operating continuously for 75 days in waters up to 3,000 metres deep.
“For the data acquisition, the OBN receiv- ers registered seismic reflections generated by acoustic waves transmitted by a source boat,” Petrobras said. “Going forward, the informa- tion gathered will undergo the seismic process- ing phase, which consists of the application of specific computational techniques to create geological imagery of the subsurface zone. The outcome of this work will result in high-quality geophysical data.”
The Búzios field lies in the Santos Basin. It is believed to hold more than 3bn barrels of crude oil and is the second largest discovery made in Brazil’s pre-salt zone since 2007.
Búzios is one of the fields included in Bra- zil’s transfer of rights programme. This initiative is designed to let international oil companies (IOCs) bid for the right to develop sections of the offshore zone where Petrobras has already carried out exploration work and has discovered at least 5bn barrels of crude.
