Gazprom Neft prepares to commercialise Arctic gas
RUSSIA
Gazprom Neft wants to monetise gas at its Novoportovskoye field.
RUSSIA’S Gazprom Neft is progressing a plan to commercialise gas resources at its largest Arctic oil project.
State engineering agency Glavgosexpertiza said on January 17 it had approved designs filed by Gazprom Neft for the construction of a major gas processing and compression complex at the Novoportovskoye oilfield. Starting in 2022, the complex would handle around 11bn cubic metres of associated petroleum gas gas and 5.1 bcm of dry gas. Its general designer Krasnod- ar-based is NIPIgazpererabotka.
Novoportovskoye is situated on the Yamal Peninsula, in a remote area hundreds of kilo- metres south of Bovanenkovo and other major gas fields operated by Gazprom and Novatek.
The field came on stream in 2012 and cur- rently produces around 160,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil for export via tanker. But there is no infrastructure to commercialise its gas resources, estimated at 320 bcm. So far, all the gas produced at the field has either been re-injected into res- ervoirs to maintain pressure, or used as fuel for on-site power generation.
Gazprom Neft initially looked at develop- ing its own LNG export terminal to ship the gas overseas. But it then settled on a simpler plan to build a 115-km pipeline from Novopor- tovskoye, across the Gulf of Ob to Gazprom’s Yamburgskoye gas field, where it can be fed into the national grid.
The proposed complex will process gas before it is pumped into this pipeline, which will have a flow capacity of 20.5 bcm per year. In addition, Gazprom Neft plans to drill new wells to boost output of gas.
Commercialising stranded gas is a serious challenge for Russian producers in the Arctic, particularly as Russian regulations require that producers utilise at least 95% of the APG they produce.
Gazprom Neft has found an alternative solu- tion at the Arctic East-Messoyakhskoye field, where it is partnered with Rosneft. Instead of re-injecting APG simply to maintain well pres- sure, it has been re-injecting it into reservoirs for storage at the neighbouring West-Messoyakh- skoye field, which is yet to be developed.
