NEWS IN BRIEF

available for exploration and a new explorer looking to supply Australian-only gas users.
Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham today announced 12 prospective parcels of land were now open to tender across Queensland’s resource rich Bowen and Surat basins between Blackwater and Goondiwindi.
“This is about keeping exploration moving in Queensland to support our post COVID-19 economic recovery,” Dr Lynham said.
“Queensland has been the leader in getting gas to Australian users, including our manufacturers, to fuel jobs. More affordable domestic gas supply will
help secure more Aussie jobs across the supply chain—from the well head to the manufacturing plant.”
Queensland Regional Development and Manufacturing Minister Glenn Butcher says 872 km2 of the land could only supply gas to the Australian market - good news for manufacturers and jobs.
“Gas is critical to our manufacturers as a feedstock as well as an energy source to fuel jobs,” he said. “Already we have Senex Energy producing critical gas feedstock and energy, including to businesses like Orica at Yarwun. As well, Australian Pacific LNG and Armour Energy’s joint venture project near Chinchilla is set to supply gas next year to help secure around 650 manufacturing jobs in plants across Queensland.”
The land is in central and southern Queensland across five regional areas: 2501 square km near Rolleston; 2642 square km between Blackwater and Banana; 882 square km, south of Theodore; 703 square km, 30 km south of Moonie; 18 square km, 15km south- west of Wandoan.

Senex and CleanCo
Queensland sign new gas
sales agreement
Senex Energy today announced it had agreed a further domestic gas sales agreement with power generator CleanCo Queensland for 2.55 petajoules (PJ) of natural gas.
Under the one-year agreement, Senex will supply CleanCo with 2.55 PJ of natural gas from Atlas, commencing 1 January 2021. Gas will be supplied at the Wallumbilla Gas Hub in Queensland at a fixed price in line with current market levels.
CleanCo is the new Queensland Government-owned corporation focused
on delivering affordable and reliable clean energy. Atlas gas will fuel Swanbank E, CleanCo’s highly efficient 385 MW gas-fired power station near Ipswich in south-east Queensland. Initial gas sales to CleanCo – the first from dedicated domestic gas acreage in Australia – have been made since December 2019.
Senex has contracted more than 35
PJ of natural gas from Atlas (including potential contract volume expansions and term extensions). Atlas gas production for calendar year 2020 is fully contracted and 2021 expected production is more than 70% contracted.
Senex has drilled 39 wells of the 50-well Atlas campaign, with Atlas gas production continuing to perform strongly at ~14 TJ/day. Total daily Surat Basin gas production is above 32 TJ and continues to increase towards initial nameplate capacity of 48 TJ/day (about 18 PJ/ year).

Domestic gas prices fall as LNG exports sustained
A new report by energy consultancy EnergyQuest has found Australian domestic gas prices have fallen while shipments of Australia’s gas exports have been sustained.
The report shows the number of liquified natural gas shipments increased 3 per cent in April from the same month last year, while domestic gas prices have dropped more than 50 per cent in the same period and are at their lowest since 2016.
APPEA Chief Executive, Andrew McConville said the report again confirms that sustained domestic supply and export revenue are not mutually exclusive – one need not come at the expense of the other.
The price of Brent crude oil (the most relevant international price marker for Australia) fell by nearly 75 per cent between January and April 2020, to its lowest level in 20 years.
McConville said governments must resist calls coming from some for intervention in the gas market that force non-commercial outcomes.
“Such approaches act as a tax on gas production, raising costs and can discourage long-term investment, reducing production and undermining long-term energy security,” he said.
