Putin warns of Libyan militants
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concerns that militants are moving from Libya into Syria. e Russian president, speaking in Rome following talks with
the Italian prime minister, was quoted by Reuters as saying the situation in Libya was deteriorating. Moscow is backing a cease re and talks, in a bid to resolve the country’s burgeoning civil war.

Angola to boost US ties
A ling with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) reveals that Angola has engaged Squire Patton Boggs to represent it in the US. According to the ling, the lawyers will provide Angola with advice on bringing Angola’s nancial system up to international standards, increase US trade and investment,
and enhance Angola’s pro le in the US. It went on to acknowledge there was a potential political aspect to this work,
saying some of its “activities may involve communicating with various o cials in the executive and legislative branches of the US government”.
Seplat postpones capital markets day
Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc’s capital markets event was due to be held at the Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos for analysts and investors on July 9 at 13:30 (Lagos time). At the request of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, the session has been postponed to July 12 2019 at 14.30 (Lagos time).
e session will focus on the Assa North and Ohaji South (ANOh) green eld gas and condensate development project, in Nigeria. A Final Investment Decision (FID) was taken by Seplat to invest in the ANOh project,
as announced in the Company’s 2018 full year results on 6 March 2019. e session will include presentations from the Seplat management team.

Court orders interim
forfeiture of Diezani’s
jewellery
Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal high Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on July 5, 2019, ordered the interim forfeiture of some pieces of jewelry and a customized gold iphone all valued at $40mn belonging to Diezani Alison- Madueke, a former Minister of Petroleum Resources. Justice Oweibo gave the order, following an ex parte application led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Alison-Madueke is the only defendant in the application led by the EFCC pursuant to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other related O ences Act No. 14, 2006.
e applicant, through its lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, stated in the application that the items were found and recovered from the premises of the respondent, Alison-Madueke.
e EFCC further stated that it reasonably suspected that the items were acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities. In granting the order, Justice Oweibo directed the applicant, EFCC, to publish the interim forfeiture order in any national newspaper within 14 days
for the respondent or anyone interested in the items to show cause why they should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

Botswana’s CBM plans
Botswana is negotiating with two companies on a CBM power plant, the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security was quoted as saying by Construction Review. e two companies
– Sekaname and Tlou Energy – have been chosen as preferred bidders for the project by the Public Procurement Disposal Asset Disposal Board (PPADB).
“As per the PPDB Act, the negotiations outcomes will go through an approval process by PPADB prior to awarding of the tender,” said the ministry in a statement.
Tlou has said the power plant will have maximum capacity of 100 MW.

Kenya strikes power-for-
crude deal with South
Sudan
Kenya has struck a deal with South Sudan to swap power for oil over the next two years. A report in Standard Media said Kenya would provide electricity from its geothermal to South Sudan, in return for crude. e deal was struck by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir during a visit to a geothermal area in Naivasha.
ere are plans to build transmission lines to Lodwar, a government o cial said. “We are engaging our brothers from South Sudan so that Kenya can get gas from the oil elds while they in return will get electricity,” he said.
Land in Olkaria will be donated to South Sudan to build an industrial park.
