China-Europe container traffic across EEU to almost double by 2020
Container traffic between China and Europe spanning the territory of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) will almost double between 2017 and 2020, the Russia-led Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) expects.
There has already been a sharp increase in railway container traffic between China and the EU, transiting via EEU countries — princi- pally Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus — but around 80% of deliv- eries are still made by sea. The growth of transit container traffic through the EEU depends on the development of trade between China and the EU, although EEU countries will need to expand their transport infrastructure and remove a number of barriers, the EDB report warns.
The EDB’s Silk Road Transport Corridors report released on April 12 projects a jump in the number of 40-foot container equivalent units (FEU) transiting the EEU region from the 131,000 FEU record- ed in 2017 to 200,000-250,000 FEU by 2020.
Stadler Rail, a Swiss manufacturer of railway rolling stock, has won its first deal with Slovenian railways operator Slovenske Zeleznice worth about €170mn. It will design and build 26 single and double- decker multiple units for the Slovenian state-owned company, reads Stadler’s April 18 press release.
The Swedish company tried and failed to get into the Slovenian market decades ago, when it bid to deliver 30 multiple units to Slo- venia back in 1990.
“It delights us even more that 20 years later, our second attempt has been successful and we have managed to break into the Slove- nian market,” Peter Spuhler, owner and CEO of Stadler said.
A nearly finished new bridge in the northern Bohemia region has been demolished after the discovery that the concrete which the construction company had used wasn’t good enough.
According to the Czech Road and Motorway Directorate (RSD), the concrete could be damaged by the road salting in winter and must be rebuilt. But the larger question is how widespread the issue may be, given other motorway quality and infrastructure problems.
