Georgia denies issuing permit for Poti deep- water port project
The question of whether the Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) will opt to shelve its plans for a $2.5bn flagship deep-water port in Georgia because of government support for a rival Black Sea development has become even more difficult to answer.
ADC warned on May 30 that it was “on the verge of stopping” its project in Anaklia because Georgia’s economy and sustainable development ministry was set to issue a permit for port construction in Poti, a location a little further south on Georgia’s Black Sea coast.
However, later on May 30 Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava announced that a deep-water port in Poti would not be built as the permit green-lighted for the port had been cancelled, according to a report put out by Agenda.ge.
The Turkish government has reportedly hugely cut and postponed fees charged to the consortium operating the new Istanbul Airport. The consortium appears to have been under considerable financial pressure for some time but officials have, according to a piece writ- ten for news website Airport Haber by columnist Ali Kidik, moved to ease the situation.
The operator, IGA, is to pay €335mn per year for the right over the first two years to run the airport, almost exactly two-thirds less than the original €1bn annual charge, Kidik said, adding that the pay- ments would be delayed for 25 years.
Istanbul Airport, a mega airport that officials want to see become the world’s busiest flight hub in coming years, was opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last October.
The World Bank on June 5 approved $30mn in grant financing from the International Development Association (IDA) to be allocated for the Dushanbe Water Supply and Wastewater Project.
The project is set to support improved water and wastewater infra- structure for residents of selected areas of Tajikistan’s capital city, Du- shanbe. Additional financing of $2mn will be contributed to the project by the municipality of Dushanbe. Dushanbe’s population of 846,000 people and its territory of 12,700 ha are expected to double by 2040, leading to the need for significant infrastructure investments.
