 The Greatest (inspired by Invictus)
In every corner of our planet, People live in chains
Yet those who choose to fight it, Never give in to the pains.
They think to themselves,
I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
Perhaps the struggle of a single mother,
Trying to do a job for two on her own.
Setting out to give her child a future like no other,
Hoping that someday the journey will pay off when they’re all grown. She thinks to herself,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Or maybe a veteran back from war,
Yet he still hasn’t left the battlefield.
And living his life seems like an empty chore,
He finds comfort in his family, knowing one day he will be healed. He declares in his heart,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Possibly a firefighter always running to put out our blazes,
Half scared to death this might be their last.
But every time they save a life they hear the world’s praises, And realizing this is who they are meant to be, and their fears are in the past.
In the fires of our lives, they cry out, I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
A doctor in the emergency room, Tirelessly working to preserve a life. Saving the broken from certain doom, Amid all the stress and strife.
Among her grateful patients, she helps others to keep on saying, I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Our role models even experience trouble,
Trying to stay themselves under the bright lights.
The problems of a regular man seem to double,
But they keep pushing on, honing their craft all the days and nights. Their bravery helps us to think,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
One teacher tries to make a mark,
Helping to shape a young mind.
While knowing that there are more lucrative professions upon which they could embark,
It is the noblest one can find.
Allowing future generations to think for themselves, I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
All these heroes exude one message, all the same, A valuable lesson can be learned.
That while some do not achieve glory or fame, There is only one goal with which to be concerned: To be able to see others come to know,
I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
Some doubt their ability to be great,
Finding reasons not to try.
We must help them to see they are not second-rate, That they can find many odds to defy.
One day they will thank you, always thankful for the guide that showed them,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
Our mission in life is to help another find meaning, That in doing so, we may find ours.
And experience the greatest of all feeling,
The peace, that in one’s final hours,
To be able to truly feel that,
You are the master of your fate, You are the captain of your soul.
