Glimmers
In the darkest night,
There is a glimmer of starlight. In the deepest sea,
There is a glimmer of warmth. In our most difficult time, There is a glimmer of hope.
I am plunged into the dark, cold sea of sadness. I lose air.
My breath coming out in great sobs.
As I sink deeper into the darkness,
I see a glimmer of light - a hope.
I hold onto that hope as I return to the surface Where I can breathe once more.

War Wounds
My boots squeak like mice
That was my chance, I didn’t throw the dice Every opportunity, every chance
Has led up to this final glance
I look around to see
Him stopped in front of me
He falls; beside him I land
There is only one thing I understand
He is the only one I do adore
But now he’s laying there on the floor Sparks flash
Puddles splash
Blood drips
My mind slips
Tears falling to the ground
His voice is barely found
“Tell my wife I love her.”
Last words, a soft whisper.

I Am From Irish Dancers
I am from Irish dancers,
from Steak and Shake milkshakes and Spaghetti O’s. I am from the brick house with the basketball hoop. Comfortable, messy,
that always smelled like an unwashed dog.
I am from the peach tree,
the tomato plants,
and the two giant trees in my backyard.
I’m from Ocean Isle and the Irish Festival, from Tom and Karen.
I’m from the family of hard workers
and the overly compassionate,
from the “I love you more than the whole world” and “thanks for getting up today.”
I’m from Papa praying before every meal and
Church every Sunday.
I’m from grape growers,
from Grandma’s mac-n-cheese and corn beef with potatoes. From the when I was younger I wrestled a bear,
and the “I woke myself up when I was your age.”
I’m from a family of Wheaten lovers, and the never dull moments. I’m from 12278,
a place where I learned to love volleyball and basketball.
Finally, I am from a family tree that is constantly blossoming,
that I love very much.
