Historic District of
Newtown
www.newtownhistoricdistrict.org Salisbury
Take a stroll through the Historic District of Newtown, a town built after much of Salisbury was ravaged by fire in 1860 and again in 1886.
Built in 1842, the Barren Creek Spring
Church served as a church, town school,
and meeting hall before undergoing extensive renovations. Today the building
is open year-round for tours. The Barren Creek Springhouse was once part of the original Barren Creek Springs Hotel, which was a haven for travelers from 1770 until it burned in 1913. In the Barren Creek Heritage Museum, more than thirty permanent exhibits tell the story of the Barren Creek area and the town of Mardela Springs from the 1660s until the 1950s.
