Plus, as the strange occurrences and noises from the cellar increase, Faith starts to think Noah’s right after all – there are sea ghosts in their cellar – threat- ening The Lookout from the inside.Yet, now when Faith actually wants to listen to her brother, there’s no sign of him anywhere.
It’ll be Sam, oddly upset at Noah’s disappearance, who will help Faith start to piece the past together and look for Noah.And after Uncle Art discovers the large crack in the ground outside, it’ll be Sam who insists he and Faith go into the forbidden cellar.
Finally descending, there’s no evidence of sea ghosts
– though there’s every sign Noah’s been sleeping and eating down there! What Faith can see scares her more: a spider web of cracks spreading up the walls. It must be why Dad stopped them from going into the cellar, why he was desperately finding ways to get money to fix The Lookout: the house is splitting apart from deep below. Sam shows Faith a hole that opens onto what he insists are a maze of mostly blocked-up tunnels, but before Faith can decide whether to trust him (how does he know so much?!) . . . the police arrive.
