Public baths were a big part of daily life in ancient Rome – and they were not just for getting clean. People swam, exercised and had massages,
and children went for free!
First you undressed, then went into the

then warmed up in the . Next you went into the , which was really hot and full of steam. You had to get dirty to get clean: first you rubbed yourself all over with oil, then scraped it off – then went back again through the warm room and the cool pool.
Some baths had separate areas for men and women or were used by men and women at different times, but during some periods of ancient Rome it was common for men and women to bathe together. The baths were heated by , which were like underground ovens that warmed the water from beneath.
