The Colosseum was the largest in the
empire, holding 50,000 people. It is best known as the scene of many fights between gladiators, who were usually slaves, criminals or prisoners of war.
Gladiators went to special training schools and were given better food and better prison cells. Some fighters became hugely popular, but thousands of men and women were killed in these fights or by wild animals for the entertainment of the crowds.
