“Don’t believe you,” said Mary crossly. “Dickon would make you cheerful. He never talks about dead things. And he laughs great big laughs.”
She talked, then, more than she had ever had talked in her life. And Colin listened as he had never listened before. Soon their heads were so bubbling with pictures and words that they started to laugh and couldn’t stop.
Suddenly, the door opened. Mrs Medlock and the Doctor stared in horror. “Whatever’s going on?”
“This is my cousin, Mary Lennox,” said Colin haughtily. “She heard me crying so she came and found me. I like her. She must come often. She makes me better. Oh,
and we want tea. On your way out, send for tea.
Muffins, too. Mary and I want muffins.”
