Back in Colin’s room, Mary noticed that something was different. The curtain over his mother’s portrait had been drawn back.
“It doesn’t make me angry any more,” he said. “Moonlight shone on the curtain and suddenly I had to go and pull the cord. She looked down at me as if she was glad to see me.”
“You look very like her,” said Mary, “now you’re not so grumpy.” Colin trembled. “If I do . . . might my father like me better?”
