“If he’s alive?”
Ronnie doesn’t say anything and I bite down the
panic rising inside me. I don’t know how injured he was and I can’t think about it.
“He must be alive,” I say. “We made a plan for if we got separated.”
Ronnie shakes his head. “No one else got off the beach. So if they took him they will send him back,” he says. “There is no reason for them to let people from our country stay.”
“We can’t go back. People are going missing. We need to show the British what’s happening.”
Ronnie sighs and he leans back in the chair. “Has it got that bad?”
“I thought you knew. I thought that’s why you helped me. I saw you talking to my dad.”
He shakes his head and looks down. “He gave me money to keep you safe,” he says.
“We didn’t have any money. It was all gone.”
“There is always more money. Something valuable hidden away. It is my job to get it. That is why they pay me.”
