Why is March Called March?
The Romans called this month Martius. It was named after the god of war and farming. That might seem a strange combination, but both war and farming began again in March after the long winter months. Even soldiers didn’t like getting cold and wet! The Anglo- Saxons called March Lentmonath, which means ‘lengthening month’, because of the way that the daylight increases during this time. It is also where we get the word ‘Lent’ from.
Spring Equinox
20th March is the spring equinox. This is one of the days in the year in which the number of hours of daylight is exactly equal to the number of hours of darkness. This happens because the rays of the sun are shining straight at the equator (the middle of the Earth).
