On 3 May 1951, the Royal Festival Hall was opened in London on the South Bank of the River Thames. It was built as part of the celebrations for the Festival of Britain, which was created to give people hope after the Second World War.
225 years ago . . .
On 14 May 1796, Sir Edward Jenner tested the first ever vaccine. He gave his gardener’s son a small amount of cowpox to see if it stopped him from getting the full disease. It worked, and he went on to invent the smallpox vaccination we still use today.
