For wealthy Romans, the long evening meal was more of a social event than just a chance to eat. There would often be guests and entertainment between courses, with CLOWNS, dancers or POETRY READINGS.
Imagine finishing your ChIcKeN NuGgEtS and pOtAtO WaFfLeS when a dude with a red nose and crazy hair suddenly leaps out and sprays you in the face with water from a fake flower. Not cool, Mr Clown. Not cool at all.
The rich dressed for dinner in an elegant Greek robe called a synthesis. What doesn’t sound quite as classy is the fact that it was considered polite to bUrP lOuDlY to show that you’d enjoyed your meal. Feel free to try it next time you have a special meal in a restaurant – your parents will be sO PrOuD!

A SKELETON was sometimes passed round at banquets to remind guests that life was short and should be enjoyed. It's similar to pass the parcel, but with fewer presents and more depressing reminders of death.
