You will need:
Clean, empty jam jar
Kitchen roll
1 broad bean seed or 1 dried butter bean from the supermarket
Water
10 cm plant pot Compost
Grow a Bean in a Jar
You don’t need a veg patch or allotment for this activity - put the jar on a windowsill and then plant out into a pot.
1 Rinse the jam jar and leave it a little damp inside.
2 Put a folded piece of kitchen roll into the jar and press it up against
the glass.
3 Pop the bean seed in between the kitchen roll and the glass and leave the jar on the windowsill.
4 Add a spoonful of water to the seed every day – just enough to keep the jar moist but not waterlogged.
5 Check the bean after a few days and you should notice that it will have sprouted.
6 After a couple of weeks, you’ll have your own broad bean seedling! You’ll be able to plant it out into the 10 cm plant pot of compost.
7 If you have space outside, you can plant your seedling in the ground.
As your plant gets larger, you will need to support it with a lolly stick or twig. When it’s about 75 cm high, snip off the top and wait for your bean harvest!
