SAFETY TIPS
• Some parts of these recipes require grown-up assistance, such as peeling and chopping, or heating ingredients over a hot pan. Make it clear why these things require a grown-up and demonstrate the safest way to hold and use equipment. Avoid wearing long sleeves in the kitchen so that clothing does not get caught in food.
• Practice washing hands when cooking so that it becomes second nature for the whole family. It is very important to wash up between touching different types of ingredients – never go straight from touching raw meat to touching other utensils or cooked food.
• Use garden tools safely and ensure everyone understands why a grown-up might be needed to handle anything sharp or heavy. Make sure everyone has the right protection for their hands – every garden is different and gardening gloves protect everyone from any hidden weeds that might irritate the skin.
• Wear sturdy shoes when outdoors – you never know what might be slippy when you’re walking beside a river or pond. Grown-up supervision is needed when around areas of water.
• Always be cautious if you aren’t sure what a flower, leaf or berry is – why not look it up when you are back at home and try to spot it on your next trip outside once you know that it is safe to touch or eat.
• Respect stinging insects;w garden is just as much their home as it is yours. Never hit or wave at wasps or bees – try to stay still and give them space until they fly away.
• Wear old clothes with long sleeves for messy art activities and wash them separately from your normal clothes. Always make sure that paints and powders are safe for the skin before touching them.
