Negro spiritual: “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
Standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, in 1963, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929 – 1968) gave a speech about civil rights and racial equality. It included these words.
This is one of the most famous speeches of modern history, using the language and rhythms of the church pulpit – King was a Baptist minister – to sing out for racial equality.
