  Anna Sewell’s classic story Black Beauty, published in 1877, was a pioneering children’s novel because it is narrated by the horse. (Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse, narrated by Joey, is indebted to Black Beauty.) Sewell’s novel teaches us that animals have feelings. It also shows that kindness is more important, as a measure of a person, than wealth.
