There seems to be a consensus that we have to overcome fears and face failure. How we respond to it is what matters. Just as those who know no fear cannot be brave, as Mark Twain reminds us in the previous extract, so it is true that those who know no failure cannot be strong, as author Philip Pullman says here, in his 1996 novel Clockwork, or, All Wound Up. The survivors are the true successes.
