Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness for anyone.
Edith Cavell
Edith Cavell was a British nurse, and a spy during the First World War. She helped some two hundred Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium, for which she was court-martialled, found guilty of treason and executed. She spoke these words on the night before her execution, on 12 October 1915.
This is one of my favourite inscriptions on a statue. It stands at the foot of St Martin’s Lane, in London. As I write, I resolve to lay flowers there next 12 October.
