Cats and dogs were becoming more popular as pets, so some vets started to specialise in treating smaller animals.
1900s 1922
Aleen Cust was the first woman to be recognised as a vet by the Royal College
of Veterinary Surgeons.
Many pets were abandoned during the Second World War. In England,
a vet called Buster Lloyd Jones cared for many of them in his own home.
An American vet called Louis J. Camuti became the first vet to work only with cats.
1980s 1900s
Veterinary surgeries became common
in most cities. Pets were taken to these surgeries instead of being visited at home.
1939–1945

1960s
Drug companies started to produce lots of new animal medicines.
