The first years of training are all about how animals’ bodies work. Young vets learn how every different system of the body works together to keep an animal healthy.
There is a lot of information to remember and time spent listening to experts talk. But there are also real animals to meet!
DID YOU KNOW?
A dog’s body contains around 350 pairs of muscles, each with a different name. That’s a lot of new words to learn!
The later years of training are called the ‘clinical years’. This is when trainee vets learn how medicines work and practise surgical techniques, like stitching up wounds and taking blood. They look inside animals’ bodies using X-rays and ultrasounds.
They also look inside the bodies of animals that have died, to learn where all the organs are supposed to go. Finally, they learn how to talk to owners about their animals in a kind and friendly way.
After many years of training, it’s time to decide which sort of vet you would like to be . . .
