If an animal’s illness is particularly serious or complicated, they may be sent to a referral hospital. The vets that work there are often experts in treating certain parts of the body.

Cardiologists are experts in hearts.
Ophthalmologists spend all their time treating eyes.
Bush babies have large eyes to see in the dark.
Dermatologists specialise in problems with the skin.
Frogs can breathe through their skin.
Neurologists know lots about the brain and nervous system.
Bottle-nose dolphins have bigger brains than humans.
There are even vet dentists who work on animals’ teeth.
Walrus tusks can grow as long as 1 metre.
Vets can also specialise in working with a certain type of animal.
Poultry vets
treat mainly chickens.
