The police service trains both dogs and horses to help them to solve crimes and keep people safe. The people that look after these animals are called dog handlers and mounted policemen and women.
Some dogs are specially bred to work as guide dogs, medical detection dogs, sniffer dogs or therapy dogs. Animal trainers teach them the special skills they will need to succeed.
RSPCA inspectors investigate cases of animal cruelty and rescue animals that are being badly treated.
