Whoah there! You should probably do that
in a bucket – you’re making a terrible mess. Sorry to make your lunch make an unexpected reappearance, but it’s true!
People also ate monkeys, lizards, frogs . . . and even dogs (if you have a pet pooch, make sure it doesn’t read that bit). Ants, WoRmS, and caterpillars were also sometimes on the menu.
If you´re looking for me I´ll be hiding in a cave. A very deep, dark cave.
So next time you feel like complaining about your school meal, don’t. You could be getting maggot and worm stew with a side order of cRiSpY FrIeD SlUgS.
Of course, it wasn’t all insects, grubs and unfortunate canines. There was sCuM as well! Mmmmm. Lovely, tasty scum from a lake. Is your mouth watering yet?
We got you a lovely birthday cake.

The Aztecs made a kind of cake from the blue-green algae, which was full of WaTeR FlY eGgS, that floated on the surface of the lake. Boys and men scooped it up with nets or shovels and dried it in the sun before cutting it into blocks. It would then be edible for a year.
Who could pOsSiBlY say no to a year-old scummy algae cake full of fly eggs? Fussy people, that’s who. 29
