Page 4 - SAMPLE The Life and Time of Lonny Quicke
P. 4
On the brink of sacrificing his life, Lonny is stopped when the teacher is made to realise the terrible consequences of his actions. It is decided that Lonny must return to the forest, while Midge can stay at school.
Lonny sees Midge growing in confidence and developing friendships, while he, Lonny, is once more isolated and cut off from the world. He decides to leave in secret. He will visit all the places he remembers from his mother’s photograph album, far away from both the forest and Farstoke.
But on his way past the town Lonny hears that Midge has had a terrible accident. He has to choose between keeping his own life, or saving his brother’s. Lonny realis- es that he can’t fight who he is – he’s a lifeling. He must embrace his true nature, or he will always be hiding. He saves Midge, and becomes a very old man.
Although old, Lonny realises he is now free from his lifeling worries. He encourages his father to accept help from the people of Farstoke; and the people of Farstoke decide they will change the stories they tell about lifeling folk.
In the last scene we see Lonny leaving the forest to visit all the places he has seen in his mother’s photograph album.
