Embryo
Biological sex
The biological sex of a baby is usually decided by whether they have a penis or a vulva when they are born.
These are where eggs are made. Penis
The penis sits outside of the body in front of the testicles. By the time a person is a grown-up, the penis can be used to help make a baby.
Placenta
This body part is grown inside the womb and is used to pass food and oxygen to the growing baby. It comes out of the womb after the baby is born.
Sperm
Sperm are made inside a person’s testicles and are used to help make a baby.
Testicles
The testicles sit outside of the body behind the penis. Sperm are made here.
Urethra
This tube carries wee out of the body through a hole in the tip of the penis or at the front of the vulva.
Vagina
The vagina is a tube which leads from the vulva to the womb. Sperm can get into the body through the vagina,
and babies are born through the vagina.
Vulva
The vulva sits outside of the body and is made of many parts. At the front is a tiny hole leading to a tube called the urethra which is used for
doing a wee. Behind the urethra is a bigger hole leading to a tube called the vagina.
Womb
This is the place where babies are grown after the sperm and egg have met.
Eggs
Eggs are made inside a person’s ovaries and are used to help make a baby.
An embryo is the very beginning of a baby which forms after an egg and sperm have joined together.

This word is used to describe a baby’s biological sex

When an embryo has developed arms and legs, ears, eyes, a nose and a mouth, it is called a foetus.
Incubator
An incubator is a warm cot where a baby that has been born too soon can be cared for by midwives, doctors and nurses.
Intersex
This word is sometimes used to describe a baby’s biological sex if their body has parts that are like a penis and parts that are like a vulva.
Labour
This word is used to describe the way a person’s muscles squeeze hard to push a baby through the vagina so it can be born.
Male
This word is used to describe a baby’s biological sex
if they are born with a penis. Midwife
This is a person whose job it is to look after people growing babies. They help a person during labour to give birth to a
baby, and make sure the baby
is healthy after it is born.
