Kingfishers are small birds with long, sharp beaks for catching fish, stunning bright blue and orange feathers, and little red legs. You can find them all across Europe and Asia, as well as in some parts of Northern Africa. They like to live beside streams, wetlands, rivers and lakes. Males and females look almost identical and are equally bright, but the female kingfisher has an orange section of beak where the male’s beak is completely black.
Despite being so brightly coloured, it can be difficult to spot kingfishers because of their
shy nature and ability to blend in. They build their tunnel-like nests in the sides of riverbanks, making it easy for them to hide.
