Chapter Two: And All Who Sail In Her
Week 1, Day 7 The Arabian Sea
They were seven days – eight nights – in when Isobel saw it.
She had discovered on the fourth night that it was possible to get out on deck without being seen. There were two corridors of cabins – Row A and Row B – and their cabin was on Row A. This was much better, Isobel thought, because Row A had the stairs and the door to the deck.
To get out on to the deck, the inhabitants of Row B had to walk all along the corridor and through the heavy fire door that led to Row A before they even got a sniff of salty air. The door between the corridors was propped open in the day, but at night it was latched shut in case of fire, and it was so heavy that it took the
strongest steward to open it in the mornings.
