Education: Learn how to write a news story
Learn the basics of how to become a reporter and create your own newspaper at our weekly reporter school. You will learn how to identify stories and check facts, to organise your notes, to listen, to interview and to
write your own articles and take your own pictures. These exercises are suitable for primary school students upwards. At the end of the lessons the very best stories sent in will have the chance to be published in your local newspaper and on its website under YOUR name. So let’s start with the basics which you will need every week.
Let’s go...
1. Firstly, pick a name your new newspaper: For example, The Kitchen Gazette, Ellie Post

Lesson 1
Today's lesson atjournalism school is learning what is news and what makes a story. Anything that is interesting and new to you and the people around you has great potential Let's start by making a list of five things YOU are interested in - as others might be too. For
example: The sky, sport or computer games. Now you have a go ...
Now pick one of those five and think about something that happened or interested you on that subject. For example:

News: There was a full moon in the sky and it looked much bigger than usual Now you have a go...

Now comes the important part. For every story you must apply the five W’s and the H question. These are the key things you always need when compiling a story as a journalist - everywhere from local papers to the TV news. If, for example, I was writing about seeing the moon in the sky looking bigger than normal:
WHO was involved: My family were staring at the sky. WHAT happened: The moon looked very big.
WHEN did it happen?: Wednesday evening before bedtime. WHERE did it happen: In the sky above our garden.

WHY did it happen: Because there were no clouds.
HOW: My family was in the garden because it was nice and warm and we are abiding by the lockdown rules.

check all the information. Congratulations, you are officially a trainee reporter.
Homework:
1. Find something new and interesting to write a story on. It could be your mum's job, your garden, your favourite hobby or what you can see from your window. Gather some
information which will help you write a story next week using the five W’s and the H.
2. Watch, listen or read a story in the news. Write down what story you found interesting and what story you didn’t.
