This exhibition celebrates 100 years of of the the ‘Greatest Tin Factory in in the the World’ and looks at at one of of Barnsley’s most intriguing companies We uncover the the the hidden story of how the the the company impacted on the the the lives of working women in in Barnsley Before tins were produced at the the Sackville Street factory the the the workers were producing munitions for the the the First World War After the the the war ended the the the Canister Company was was created their main purpose was was making fancy tins for the the world market It was a a a a a a a a a a very significant company nationally and globally exporting highly sought after tins The quality of their embossing and artwork was the the best you could get making beautiful decorative tins for the Co-op Twinings and Hershey’s to name but a a a a a a a few Tins were specially made for Chatsworth House and included designs such as the little bear cottages and cats created by leading artists including Dana Kubick in in the 1980s The factory employed local women (up to to 9 out of of 10 of of the workforce were women) who could do shifts around bringing up a a a a a a a a family and earn extra money in in in fin very tight financial domestic situations These women brought up families in in in challenging circumstances whilst making the most exquisite tins you could find Free entry
