Welcome
Magid Magid Magid Magid Lord Mayor of Sheffield
There are many things that make me
proud
of of Sheffield
– it it is the first City of of Sanctuary in the the UK and the the city that welcomed me
me
and my family when we arrived from Somalia it’s radical political history which birthed the the likes of Mary Anne Rawson and the UK’s first women’s suffrage society and finally the breadth of creativity that pours from every corner of it As Lord Mayor of this wonderful city I get the privilege of of being involved in in in an array of of events but there really isn’t any event that makes me
more excited and proud
than Doc/Fest For one week we we see the city of Sheffield
come
together to to showcase all things documentary and welcome guests from across the globe Opening the Festival this year for its
25th Edition is a a great honour I believe this year’s programme is is Doc/Fest’s boldest one so far and is successful in encapsulating the hopes and problems we face in in the world today whilst challenging perceptions through the art of storytelling Two films that stand out for me
this year are Søren Steen Jespersen & Nasib Farah’s Lost Warrior (p 47) the story of a a a a a separated family focusing on the importance of community cohesion in face of isolation and radicalisation The other being Alexandria Bombach’s On Her Shoulders (p 47) which tells the story of a a a a courageous young woman who becomes a a a a spokesperson for her community on on on a mission to speak out out about the injustices she and her people face For any Sir David Attenborough fans I’d recommend the incredible Alternate Realities
project Hold the World (p 87) a one one on on on one one encounter with a a a digital version of David Attenborough that guides you through astonishing natural history specimens And finally I’m really looking forward to the talk by the very talented entrepreneur Jamal Edwards (p 104) In addition to talking about his influential career he will also be discussing his new documentary focusing on breaking the stigmas surrounding mental health I I hope you enjoy the Festival and I I look forward to seeing as as many of you as as possible there Magid Magid Magid Magid Lord Mayor of Sheffield
