YORKSHIRE POST THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 28 2017
A SPECIAL FEATURE FROM THE YORKSHIRE POST IN SUPPORT OF MAGGIE’S
THE CAMPAIGN Today we are calling on the people of Yorkshire to get behind the creation of the county’s first Maggie’s Centre. Planning permission has been granted
and an incredible £5m has been raised to construct an exemplary building in the grounds of St James’s Hospital in Leeds. But another £1m is needed to run the centre which will support over 30,000 cancer patients and their families in Yorkshire every year, helping them to deal with this devastating disease which will touch every one of us.
Whether you are a business or an individual, Maggie’s Yorkshire needs your help.
Maggie’s Centres offer practical support for people living with cancer and we need £1m to bring one to Yorkshire. PICTURE: MAGGIE’S.
Join us to ba le fear of cancer
When living with a cancer diagnosis you’re likely to be fearful of what will happen, of potential side effects of treatment, as well as worrying about your family and how you will cope with everything. It is likely to be one of the most challenging times of your life.
Maggie’s Centres offer a unique blend of free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and for those closest to them in a building designed to be calming and peaceful, a home from home with a welcoming kitchen table at its heart. There are already 20 Maggie’s Centres in the UK and yet Yorkshire, despite being the largest county, is one of the few without a Maggie’s Centre.
However, that is set to change with your help. Maggie’s Yorkshire will be a place where
people affected by cancer can have a cup of tea in a calming environment and talk to an experienced cancer support expert about anything they feel they need to talk
about. Where they can enjoy the serenity of the space and gardens knowing they are amongst people who understand their journey and can provide practical help. A quiet, safe and beautiful space just a short walk from the main oncology area of St James’s University Hospital.
We are extremely lucky in Yorkshire
to have some of the best cancer clinicians and treatments available in the world and those on a cancer journey and their families deserve
a place that gives them the space, support and respite they need alongside the clinical treatments. That is what we are aiming to
bring to St James’s for the people of Yorkshire.
Like so many of us, I have seen family members, colleagues and
friends deal with a cancer diagnosis and have seen how tough it is for
all involved, which is why I chose to
get involved with Maggie’s by leading this campaign. I passionately believe
that everyone on a cancer journey deserves to have the support of a Maggie’s
Centre.
So I’m very excited to have reached this
critical stage of our campaign. There have
been highs and lows along the way to making Maggie’s Yorkshire a reality, but we now
have the finishing line within our sights. A number of very generous individuals, trusts and foundations have made incredible gi s and we’ve been fortunate to have had amazing support from some the corporate sector in particular First Direct, DLA Piper, Sky and Johnston Press and from lots of people who’ve taken part in fund-raising events.
If this coverage, kindly donated by the Yorkshire team at Johnston Press, touches you then please do get involved and make a real difference to people impacted by cancer in Yorkshire.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO OFFER HOPE IN THE DARKEST HOURS
I recently lost my father-in-law to cancer; I lost my grandfather to cancer; I’ve lost friends to the disease and seen others’ lives changed forever. Statistics suggest I will lose someone else close to me to cancer and may ultimately face my own ba le with it.
Every year 30,000 people across Yorkshire and The Humber are
told they have cancer, and yet, our county is the biggest in the country without a Maggie’s centre offering
specialist support, counselling and conversation to cancer patients, their friends and families to help them in their day-to-day ba les. Yorkshire, we need a Maggie’s to ensure feelings of fear and
dread are met with reassurance, smiles and hope. You can make it happen.
Although to be built in the grounds of Leeds’ St James’s University Hospital, this facility will be for the whole county. To date, fund-raising
efforts have amassed £5m. The requirement is £6m, and I urge you to help.
To show our collective support, each one of Johnston Press’ Yorkshire titles will carry this call-to- arms: from our flagship dailies The Yorkshire Post, The Star, Sheffield and Yorkshire Evening Post to our leading weeklies including The Scarborough News, Halifax Courier, Doncaster Free Press, Sheffield Telegraph, Wakefield Express and
Harrogate Advertiser – and indeed every other title at our disposal.
Through our unrivalled community engagement with people who we know care about this county, we genuinely believe that with your help, we could be looking ourselves in the mirror before Christmas knowing we have together helped people. What
a wonderful Christmas gift to the county that would be.
We hope you can help us to help Yorkshire.
