Before they went to war, they trooped into a photography studio to create keepsakes for their families. The soldiers captured by Luke Bagshaw’s primitive camera did not realise that the pictures might be all that remained.
A new exhibition of Bagshaw’s work, restored from the original glass plates at Doncaster’s Cusworth Hall, tells a story of innocence lost, of an age before hope gave way to horror.
