DESIGNING YOUR PERFECT KITCHEN
If you’re thinking about building a new kitchen, there are a few things you need to consider. With over 40 years’ experience in designing and fitting kitchens, the team at Designer Kitchen Direct (DKD) have an innovative approach to design and can guide you through the decision-making process to create your new dream kitchen.
We spoke with their Managing Director, Mary Major, for her expert advice on planning your new kitchen.
“The top kitchen trend today is to create ‘living spaces’ where you
can eat, play and relax with room to prepare and cook meals. Kitchens are more than a place to store and prepare food – they’re the hub of the home where we can spend quality time together.
“First you have to get the fundamentals right. Consider the plumbing, heating and electrics – you will need to decide on the position of your appliances so that the necessary piping and wiring work can be factored into the renovation.
“Think also about the practicalities of your kitchen, such as ensuring there
is plenty of counter space for food preparation. If you have the room, a kitchen island is a great option to give you additional workspace, which can also double up as a place to eat.
“Storage can often be a problem but today there are lots of innovative internal space saving solutions to help you make the most out of even the smallest of areas – shelving, kitchen trolleys, and plate racks can make a huge difference.
“Quality is key – rigidly built cabinets with solid sides and backs will ensure your kitchen withstands the tests of time and continuous use.
“Regarding style, there are so many options to choose from these days
– will the room be traditional or contemporary? What colour scheme will you go for? What cabinet finishes and accessories will you opt for?
“If you see something in a magazine or online, be sure to make a note of
it as this can help you to shape your new kitchen and add your style to this room.
“Taking the time to think about exactly how you want to use this space now will mean you have years of enjoyment in the future.”
