Stravinsky Double Bill
In this remarkable performance, filmed live
at Hamer Hall in 2019, Sir Andrew Davis guides the orchestra through two of Stravinsky’s acclaimed works - one wiId, riot- inducingand revolutionary, the other a lyrical, little- known masterpiece. Le Sacre du printemps - known in English as The Rite of Spring - was one ofthe most groundbreakingworksofthe 20th century.
It was so radical in
its composition and presentation that its first performance descended into a riot.
The work was written for the 1913 Paris season ofSergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes company - the original choreography was by Vaslav Nijinsky.
It’sjoined in this double bill by Persephone, based on the myth ofa divine being who

Mahler's Symphony No. 5 Experience Jaap van Zweden’s chemistry with the Philharmonic as the renowned conductor leads Mahler’s epic Fifth Symphony - a tour de force for the orchestra’s virtuoso musicians encompassing intense passion, demonic energy and breathtaking radiance.
The symphony was composed in 1901 and 1902. Among its most distinctive features are the trumpet solo that opens the work, the horn solos in the
third movement and the frequently performed Adagietto.
