Leeds Mind Together
Coronavirus is affecting all areas of day-to-day life across the UK, and indeed, all over the world.
Along with the rest of the population, Leeds Mind has been finding ways to continue to operate under unprecedented circumstances. We’ve closed our buildings, suspended face-to-face services and our members of staff are delivering support virtually from their own homes. But we are still here.
With the government advice to ‘stay at home’ meaning that human interaction
is limited, we expect that demand for our support will only increase in the coming weeks and months. Therefore, we’re determined to continue our work towards better mental health for all, which feels more important than ever during such testing times.
“We’re determined to continue our work towards better mental health for all, which feels more important than ever during such testing times”
We’re asking the population of Leeds to stand alongside us, and support themselves as well as each other under Leeds Mind Together, a campaign which aims to keep our community connected. Through this initiative, people can:
■ Access our services remotely
■ Explore ways to maintain their mental wellbeing
■ Have some online community fun
EAT WELL AND
STAY HYDRATED
Your appetite might be affected if your routine has changed, you’re less active than normal or you’re feeling particularly anxious.
Try to eat regularly to keep your blood sugar stable – this will help maintain your mood and energy. Of course, the usual advice about eating a healthy, balanced diet applies here.
Online delivery for food is busier than usual, but there
are lots of things you can do to make sure you’re getting hold
of all the protein, fruit, veg and healthy carbs you need. A friend, neighbour or family member could drop supplies on your doorstep if you’re unable to go to the supermarket, while some people will qualify for extra support under new government measures.
Drinking water is also important for both your mental and physical health. Set an alarm on your phone if you need help getting in the habit.
We’re updating our website regularly with the latest opportunities to come out of the campaign, and activity is on social media under the hashtag
REMEMBER SELF-CARE IS NOT SELFISH
As well as the essentials of healthy food and plenty of water, you need to keep on top of any medication you need. You could have a family member or friend pick your prescription up if you’re not able to, or some pharmacies are now offering a delivery service to save anyone having to go in.
While many treatment or support services, such as those offered by Leeds Mind, are having to adapt their delivery methods, they are still available. Search online for an adapted service to meet your needs.
With most people feeling a little unsettled, it’s important to take time to relax. There are lots of free apps that can introduce you to mindfulness if you haven’t tried it before, while stretching routines or yoga classes are widely available on YouTube. All you need is access to the internet and a willingness to limber up!
#LeedsMindTogether
At Leeds Mind, the mission is to enable people with mental health difficulties to flourish. With the help of volunteers, fundraisers, medical professionals and the business community, the charity works towards creating a city where everyone experiencing a mental health difficulty gets the support they need and respect they deserve.
Let’s look at some of the ways you can look after your mental wellbeing while coronavirus continues to have an impact:
