before resurrection life is released. It is this death that brings forth the
aroma and anointing of Christ from within. That is why Paul tells us it
has been granted to us not only to believe in Him but also to suffer for
Him, so that we may share in His glory (see Philippians 1:29; also
Romans 8:17). No cross, no crown!
Frankincense signifies His kingly splendour, His ministry, and His role
of intercessor on our behalf. When we decided to come to Jesus, we
also became kings and priests unto our God and have the privilege of
standing in the gap for others in the world.
Look how the verse continues—these anointings are better than
anything the merchant has to offer. We can buy almost anything with
money, but the best things in life are not things. The anointing of Jesus
Christ is neither purchasable nor obtainable from another. It is a free
gift of grace for laid-down lovers of Christ and more precious than
anything the world can give. Only Jesus can truly satisfy every longing
in our hearts. The Shulamite is now beginning to see this, and it will
result in her being willing to take up her cross and follow her Beloved.
In verses 7 and 10, we read about the King's marriage carriage, which
is a place of unconditional love and acceptance. Notice how this
carriage is protected by sixty champions—the mightiest of Israel’s
host. When our hearts choose to follow the Lord and we desire to live
in obedience to Him, we are safe and secure. Does it not say in the
Word of God—Psalm 91—that those who abide in the shelter of the
Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty? “You will not fear
