the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence
that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.”
(Psalm 91:5–6 (NIV)
As I read the above verses, I was curious to find out why there were
sixty angels surrounding the carriage. My delving revealed the
following: the number sixty is the value of the fifteenth letter in the
Hebrew alphabet—Samekh. Samekh denotes “to uphold,” “help,” or
“support.” In ancient script, this letter was drawn as a pillar upholding
three beams. As I prayed for the significance of all this, I sensed the
Holy Spirit showing me that when we abide in our God (i.e., remain in
the carriage with Him in control), we can rest in the assurance that
mighty warrior angels are watching over our bodies, souls, and spirits
(the three beams).
Let us pause and reflect on this for a moment. The NIV translation of
verse 8 says that these angels—all sixty of them—are wearing swords
that are ready at their sides. They are all (notice this little word all
again) experienced in battle and prepared for the terrors of the night. At
night, it is dark in the physical realm, but both the words' night' and
'darkness' can also describe what is happening in the spiritual realm.
We are currently experiencing a great spiritual darkness on the earth,
and many of us are unsure of how to respond to it. But God has the
solution in Isaiah 50:10 (NIV): “Who among you fears the Lord and
obeys the word of His servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who
has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.” What
