oon hit, and it was lunchtime. I went to the cafeteria to meet
my friends at our table in the back, but only Nellie and Chris
were there. Jayson was late—and he’s never late. He and I
usually come to the table at the same time. But I still waited for him
while talking to Nellie and Chris.
“Okay, guys, I’m here,” said Jayson, approaching us and sitting
beside Nellie.
I took out my lunch and slipped into the seat next to Jayson, but he
acted like he didn’t see or notice me and turned to face Nellie and Chris.
At that point, I was confused. First, he made me angry last night
about my plan, then he didn’t walk or talk to me the whole morning,
and now he was ignoring everything I did. Something was definitely
going on—either he was upset about something or he was just being a
nuisance.
“Jay,” I tried to get his attention.
He turned to me slowly, trying to take his eyes away from my face.
“Yeah?”
I couldn’t even say anything. It was like he didn’t even want to talk
to me in any way. He realized I was quiet and went back to chatting
with Nellie and Chris.
After fifteen minutes in the cafeteria, I finished my lunch and got
saved by the bell. It wasn’t that lunch was over, but anytime the clock
