THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL

hit 12:15, most of the guys in the room had to go to the gym for soccer
practice. Luckily, Chris and Jayson both played soccer, so they left,

leaving me and Nellie at the table.

It was my chance to ask Nellie about Jayson’s behavior—and why
he was acting so irritated toward me.

“Hey, Nellie, I need to ask you something.”
She packed her lunch and placed it into her bag. “Yeah?”

“Do you know why Jayson is acting so… weird?”
               “What do you mean?”

I sighed softly. “Like, he’s acting different around me—ever since

          last night when we called.”
“Last night? Different? Kandis, I don’t know what you’re talking

about. He seems normal.” She shrugged like nothing was going on.

“Well, not to me. He’s totally changed.”
“Okay, I guess I can understand.” She put her hand on her chin,

lost in another thought. “Because before lunch, when we were having
our Literacy class, I was there. And I guess you didn’t know, because I

actually saw you and Chris talking to each other in an… unusual way.”
I raised my eyebrows, stunned. I definitely didn’t know or realize

Nellie also had the Literacy class. I should’ve checked my schedule,

but… why did it bother me so much? I mean, why did it matter that she
was there, watching me and Chris talk about relationships and all?

“And…” Nellie brought me back to reality. “When I asked for the
bathroom access, I saw Jayson at his locker on my way back. I went to

say hi, and he asked me how class was going.”
